Bathroom Renovation Cost in NZ: What to Budget in 2026
September 11, 2026Read more
Building a new home is the biggest project most people ever take on, and the builder you choose shapes how the whole thing feels. SB2 Build is a Registered Master Builder based in Mosgiel, working on new homes, apartments and flat pack builds throughout Dunedin and the wider Otago region. We run the job end to end, so you have one phone number for consents, subcontractors, scheduling and site safety.
The success of your new property rests a lot on the house builders you choose, because on a new build almost every decision either saves you money early or costs you money late. SB2 Build works on three broad types of new build in Dunedin and the wider Otago region, and we can pick the job up at any stage, whether you already have consented plans or a bare section and a rough idea.
Our qualified builders deliver high-quality end results, giving you a property you can feel proud to live in and confident to sell. If you would like to talk through which of these suits your section and budget, get in touch with our team.
Get in TouchA Registered Master Builder is a building company that has been independently checked for workmanship, financial stability and experience before being allowed to join. The badge is verified by somebody other than the builder claiming it. That matters more on a new build than on almost any other kind of work, because you are paying in stages for something that is not finished yet. You need to know the company will still be standing when it is.
Registered Master Builders are vetted by an industry body that has been setting standards in New Zealand since 1892. Membership is not automatic, and it is not permanent. Builders have to demonstrate competence to get in and keep meeting the standard to stay.
It also gives you access to the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee on eligible new builds, which covers defects in materials and workmanship and protects you if a builder cannot finish the job. Our guide to the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee covers what is included and what is not.
It is easy to confuse this with the other credentials in the market. We have written up the difference between Certified Builders and Master Builders, plus a plain English guide to hiring one if you want the longer version.
Master Builder registration is one of four credentials we hold, and each one does a different job on your site. Not all of them are about the finished house. Two of them are about what happens while the work is underway.
| Credential | What it means | What it protects you from |
|---|---|---|
| Licensed Building Practitioner (LBP) | The legal licence required to carry out or supervise restricted building work on a home. Verifiable on the public LBP register. | Unlicensed work that a council can refuse to sign off |
| Registered Master Builder | Independently vetted for workmanship, financial stability and experience, with access to the 10-Year Guarantee | A builder failing partway through your build, and defects with no recourse |
| BCITO training partner | Apprentices trained to New Zealand industry standards, supervised on site | Inexperienced hands working unsupervised on your home |
| HazardCo accredited | Formal health and safety management on site, with documented processes | Liability and delays arising from an unsafe site |
If you are still weighing up who to approach, we have put together the questions worth asking before you commit.

Most people reach out to us for one of two reasons: they have consented plans that need pricing, or they have a section, a budget and a lot of unknowns. Either way, a handful of early decisions move the final number more than anything that happens later, and they are far cheaper to change on paper than on site.
Here is where we can help you protect the budget before anything is ordered.
If you already have your plans drawn up, we can quote from them. If you are at the very beginning, we can give you realistic pricing suitable for budgeting or bank pre-approval.

Creating your new home from scratch should be an enjoyable experience. For many first-time home builders it turns out to be a stressful one, usually because nobody is clearly in charge at certain stages of the build. To make your new home build stress-free, SB2 Build offers full project management from start to completion: one team, one point of contact, one source for everything you need to know.
Here is how the work splits between us.
Either Sam or Simon is always on site overseeing your job, so you are getting project management right from the top rather than from a head office in another city. We will keep in touch with you throughout the build so there are no nasty surprises and you can see exactly how your home is progressing.
For a stress-free, enjoyable build, work with a local team that does this every week. If you are looking to make alterations to your existing property instead, we handle home renovations across Dunedin too.
Get in TouchWe build from our Mosgiel base out across Dunedin city, the Taieri and the wider Otago region, and the type of section usually matters more than the distance. A new build in Otago can mean a flat Taieri subdivision lot, a steep hill suburb section, or a coastal site where exposure drives the material choices.
Areas we regularly work in include Mosgiel and the Taieri, the hill suburbs of Mornington, Roslyn, Maori Hill and Pine Hill, the coastal suburbs of St Clair, St Kilda and Tainui, and the flat through South Dunedin, Caversham and Green Island. If your section sits outside these, it is still worth asking.
It depends on the size of the house, the specification, and what the section demands in groundwork. If you have consented plans, we can quote from them. If you are still working on your plans, we can give you realistic pricing suitable for budgeting or bank pre-approval. For a closer look at where the money goes, see our breakdown of what drives build costs.
Yes. Plenty of our new builds start with plans the client has already had drawn. If you do not have plans yet, we can connect you with an architect or designer.
Yes to both. We build individual apartments, work with developers on larger apartment projects including conversions, and build flat pack and panel homes for clients building to a tighter budget.
Yes. We are based in Mosgiel and build throughout Dunedin and the wider Otago region. Get in touch with your location and we will confirm.
We do, as part of full project management. We prepare and lodge the consent application and deal with the council through the process, so it is not something you have to chase.
Whether you have consented plans ready to price or nothing more than a section and an idea, we would love to hear what you have in mind. The first conversation is about understanding the project, not selling you anything. Fill in the form and we will be in touch within the same business day, or call 027 479 7532.
